Well HELLO there! Since we could be spending quite a bit of time together in close proximity, you might want to get to know me a little bit better!
Describe yourself in three words!
Optimist, laid-back, ready-to-laugh. (Yes, I hyphenated to create one word!)
How did you get started in weddings?
While studying fashion design, I had the opportunity to intern at a well-known bridal designer for a couple of weeks and I knew that that is what I wanted to do! After college I moved to Amsterdam for a year and worked for SuitSupply which is a mens suiting company...in case the name didn't give it away. When I returned I briefly worked for a fashion retailer here in Cape Town while making wedding and Matric dance dresses in my free time. I soon quit retail and the little side venture quickly evolved into a business!
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
Oh dear, get ready for the corny stuff. As a kid I used to constantly play dress up and even went to bed with my pretty sparkly red shoes on! By the time I was seven I was asked to draw a "range" of dresses for our first grade exhibition and by thirteen I had a life plan which included becoming a model for Calvin Klein, befriending the designer and then working for him! Embarrassing, I know! But there just wasn't any other option for me.
Coffee or Tea? Hamburger or Salad?
Tea, please! And a burger every time!
Where are you based and what areas do you cover?
Our design studio is based in trendy Woodstock, Cape Town! As for the areas we cover? Well, how big is your map! Of course we prefer meeting with our clients in person, especially when it comes to having a dress custom made. However, for our brides who cannot attend fittings we do make special arrangements.
What can I expect when coming to see you?
It is important for me to create a comfortable environment for you as a bride. We are a team of three girls working together, myself and two incredibly hard-working seamstresses. At first we'll just chat about what you want and what you like, just get to know each other. You will see that we are without pretences, we don't take on a million brides, we want to keep the whole process and experience very personal and intimate.
What inspires you?
Anything! From the whimsy of soft pastels and dreamy tulles to the edge of unconventional fabrics and lively colours!
Dogs or Cats?
Dogs!! Oh my word I love dogs! They just have so much personality and are so loving and happy and keen on EVERY THING!
Favourite place in South Africa?
Cape Town, Cape Town, Cape Town! You have my heart! From the cobble-stoned streets of Kalk Bay to the sea salt air of Woodstock, the idyllic beaches of Camps Bay to the local pub in Kloof Street. Oh and the colours of the Bo-Kaap and De Waal Drive on a summer's day with Goldfish playing in the background...absolute bliss!
Are you married?
Yes! We've been together for almost 10 years and married for one and a half.
Did you make your own dress?!
Gosh no! I like everything, from super minimalism to over-the-top so I would never be able to choose a design for myself. One of my best friends, who studied with me and works for one of SA's most well-known designers, made my dress!
What advice would you give to brides & grooms?
The promise you make to each other, those vows are the only important thing on the day of your wedding. That’s it. The rest is all decorative. Of course it won't hurt to have a beautiful dress as part of the decoration!
